Mordovia Arena will host FC Mordovia Saransk after the world cup, replacing their existing Start Stadium. The club was formed in 2005 following the merger of Biokhimik and Lisma. Their current stadium has a capacity of 11,613. The capacity will reduce to 28,000 after the tournament with a promenade containing retail and leisure spaces replacing the upper stands.
Saransk has a population just shy of 300,000 and is so named as it lies on the Saranka river. A large number of buildings remain from the 17th and 18th centuries, however many areas are dominated by soviet era apartment blocks from the 60s. Gérard Depardieu is a registered resident of Saransk.
Saransk airport is being reconstructed to make it international for completion in 2017. Buses, taxis, and walking are all practical ways to get around this small city.
In June temperatures typically range from 12-23°C.
